Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t my viewfinder focus ring make things clear?
Amazingly, every pro cam viewfinder that we have ever tested has the same focus range. They will adjust  for moderate amounts of NEARSIGHTEDNESS (blurred far vision) thereby allowing these people to remove their glasses
. The focusing ring on Sony, Panasonic, and Ikegami pro cams can not adjust for farsightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism. So over-40 DPs are forced to wear magnifiers, readers or bifocals to see!

How do I know which diopter to order?

Years ago we made only custom viewfinder diopters requiring the shooter’s glasses prescription. We soon found that over 90% our clients were simply “presbyopic”. Presbyopia is age-related blurring of close objects. For these DPs we developed the CVF-Pro. This diopter adds 2.50 diopters to your existing viewfinder focusing range which has been perfect for 99% of our over-40 clients. All CVF Diopters are 100% money-back guaranteed to solve your problem. If you would like to be certain before you order, email us your prescription or describe your current vision correction status: Email us at info@technicalvision.com

Do you need to know my camera model?

We make the CVF Diopter in 2 sizes which cover all the pro cams made. The majority of today’s pro cams take the CVF 52 diopter which replaces the 52mm metal-rim cover plate. We also offer the CVF 55, sized to replace the older Sony Betacam rubber-rim cover plate.

What’s wrong with using a “close-up lens” from a camera shop?

A close-up lens was designed to attach to the front of a still camera. It can bring your monitor into better focus but has many deficiencies...including ghost images and easy fogging. The CVF Diopter was created for the demanding video professional. Years of testing have produced a design that addresses many issues beyond the focus problem.

I only need reading glasses...will the CVF Diopter™ help me?
Absolutely! Your original viewfinder does NOT adjust for "PRESBYOPIA" (over-40 farsightedness). This represents the largest number of CVF Diopter™ users.  The “Pro” was designed to correct for this age-related farsightedness without customization. Go to the
order page and order the "Pro". It's 100% GUARANTEED to correct your viewfinder focusing problem.

I must tilt my head back to see through bifocals...can the CVF Diopter™ help?
Your original viewfinder focusing ring adjusts for NEARSIGHTEDNESS. The CVF Diopter™ compensates for age-related FARSIGHTEDNESS. It puts your focus back in the middle of adjustment range. You can remove your bifocals or leave them on and view the display through the upper portion of the lens.

I wear contact lenses…will the CVF Diopter™ still work for me?
Yes! Wearing contacts only means that your viewing eye is distance-corrected when looking into the viewfinder. If you are over 40 and  have age-related farsightedness
the CVF Pro is what you need!

I wear glasses for nearsightedness?

Your original viewfinder focusing ring adjusts for up to 3.00 diopters of NEARSIGHTEDNESS. If you would like to work without glasses and are outside the focusing range then a “CUSTOM” diopter will help. Email us at info@technicalvision.com or FAX us (866-JOB-2020) your prescription and we will be happy to evaluate it for you.

Do I need to have my prescription to order?
Myopic (nearsighted) or astigmatic shooters may require a custom-made diopter and therefore we would require your prescription. Email us at info@technicalvision.com or FAX us (866-JOB-2020) your prescription and we will be happy to evaluate it for you.

What makes the CVF Diopter™ so special?
The patent-pending CVF Diopter™ is actually a multi-lens assembly loaded with benefits like personalized focusing, image magnification, internal anti-reflection coatings, electromagnetic field emission filters, anti-fogging design and scratch proof surface. All this is packed into an eyepiece designed to replace your existing cover plate. Even shooters with no focusing problems will feel a big improvement in comfort.

How does the CVF Diopter™ decrease fog formation?
Your existing camcorder viewfinder cover plate is made of thin glass, which has almost no heat retention or insulating value. As your face adds heat and moisture to the small chamber in front of your eye, the cold air within the viewfinder cools the plate. Just like single-pane windows of yesteryear, moisture condenses on the warm side of the cover plate. The patent-pending CVF Diopter™ has an insulating layer of air trapped between two refractive lenses. Tests have shown this feature significantly delays fogging. Keeping a second CVF Diopter™ in a warm pocket for a quick swap-out buys even more time!

The CVF Diopter™ blocks ultraviolet light...why is that important?

The effects of a Professional Camcorder monitor on your eye and face tissues has never been studied...but here are the facts: 1) CRT and LCD displays emit Electro Magnetic Frequencies (EMFs) in the ultraviolet range; 2) it has been proven that ultraviolet light can negatively affect human tissue, 3) A video cam professional holds his eye within 5 inches of the viewfinder monitor for thousands of hours in a career.

What makes the CVF Diopter™ so scratch resistant?
Glass, under normal wiping conditions is essentially scratch proof. Your existing cover plate is also made of glass but has anti-reflection coating on both surfaces. This is unfortunate because this fragile coating, after the constant wipings that occur under professional conditions, will eventually become very scratched and splotchy. The CVF Diopter™ has antireflection coatings only where it is needed… on the inner surfaces to reduce internal reflections. It is unnecessary on the exposed eye-side. You can wipe the CVF Diopter’s uncoated glass outer surfaces thousands of times with no effect.

How much does a CVF Diopter™ cost?
The standard CVF-Pro diopter for presbyopia is $249. Add $50 for custom-made diopters for myopia and astigmatism.
